Derby County journalist Ryan Conway has been sharing his thoughts on Rams defender Teden Mengi and his future at the Midlands club.

This comes after Conway uploaded a video onto his YouTube channel where he spoke about a range of subjects concerning Wayne Rooney’s side.

An easy one to kick off our quiz on the 2020 summer transfer window in the EFL, which player left Birmingham City to join Borussia Dortmund?

During the video, Conway was asked what the likelihood is of Mengi being at Pride Park next season after his loan spell from Premier League side Manchester United expires at the end of the current campaign.

In response, Conway had this to say on the matter.

He said: “The idea is that it’s up to Teden.

“I think Derby absolutely want him back. Manchester United are very open to letting him go out on loan again and I think the Wayne Rooney connection is, well, obviously a big one to lean on.

“I would be surprised if Teden wasn’t at Derby next season, let’s put it that way. I’d be very surprised if Teden was at another club.”

As mentioned earlier, Derby signed Mengi from Manchester United’s U23 squad on a loan deal until the end of the season back in the previous January transfer window.

Since his arrival at Derby, the 18-year-old, who is currently valued at £1.35 million, has made nine appearances for the Rams in the Championship (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts on Ryan Conway’s comments on Mengi and his future at Derby…

Given how Mengi has played 90 minutes in all but three of the nine league appearances he’s made for Derby since his arrival suggests to us that Rooney sees him as an important part of his squad at this moment in time, therefore, isn’t surprising to hear from Conway that the club would want to keep him beyond his current loan deal.

Would you be happy if Derby kept hold of Mengi for next season?

In our view, if Mengi is going to be guaranteed regular playing time at Derby, then he should seriously consider staying where he is for the foreseeable future and for the overall benefit of the youngster’s career development.
