Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has recently revealed some details of a chat that he had with Sir Alex Ferguson.

This came after an interview with Smith was featured on the latest episode of The 2 Robbies podcast and he was asked about numerous issues involving Aston Villa, their rise and the current season. While having a chat with the hosts, Smith revealed that when Villa got promoted to the top flight, he had a chat with Ferguson. He went on to reveal what the legendary Man Utd boss told him.

Villa find themselves at tenth in the Premier League table just a year after narrowly managing to avoid relegation in the 2019/20 campaign. They had finished just a single point clear of Bournemouth, who ended up getting relegated to the Championship.

Smith revealed that Ferguson told him about the importance of the Head of Media at his club, as they help managers in not reading too many newspapers and not being active on social media.

The Villa boss stated: “I met up with Sir Alex Ferguson when we got promoted. And he said to me – the most important person to you now is going to be your Head of Media. He said, because you don’t need to be reading any newspapers, any social media, he said, he should tell you everything you need to know.”

TIF Thoughts on Dean Smith’s time at Villa…

During his time at Villa so far, Smith has picked up a points-per-match tally of 1.45 over a total of 116 matches at the club (as per Transfermarkt).

When the 50-year-old was first appointed back in 2018, Villa found themselves in a financial crisis. Smith managed to keep Jack Grealish at the club and backed him to improve under his tutelage, despite the fact that Tottenham wanted to sign him.

Despite all that, Villa got promoted in 2019 and going by this season’s league position, they’ve established themselves as a Premier League side. Smith deserves immense credit for that and it seems as if the meeting with Sir Alex has worked.
