Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Juventus ace Paulo Dybala was on the verge of joining Tottenham Hotspur two years ago, telling GiveMeSport exclusively that the deal was almost completed.

The Argentina international was at the centre of a major transfer saga when Mauricio Pochettino was still in charge of the club.

Football FanCast reported at the time that Spurs were ready to make a major bid to extricate him from Juventus, as they looked to transform Pochettino’s squad.

However, the move fell apart on transfer deadline day due to an issue with image rights, per Romano, and he has confirmed that the deal was very nearly done.

Dybala has struggled with injury this season and has been restricted to just eight starts in Serie A, scoring two goals and laying on two assists.

And asked about the prospect of the 27-year-old finally making the move to the Premier League, Romano confirmed that it was a possibility, though he again pointed to the image rights hurdle.

Dybala has a contract until 2022 and he is valued at €60m (£51.1m) by Transfermarkt.

He said: “I think there are chances this summer. There are chances, it was a done deal with Tottenham two years ago, when he was close, really close, one step away from joining Tottenham.

“Then what happened is that they didn’t find agreement on image rights. He has some problems with image rights with his former agent.

“And this is something they need to do also in the summer. So it’s never easy to find an agreement with Paulo Dybala.”
