Duncan Castles featured on the latest episode of The Transfer Window podcast to discuss everything transfer related ahead of this summer’s window

Tottenham Hotspur were dumped out of the Europa League on Thursday night by Dinamo Zagreb after a stunning turnaround in the second-leg by the Croatian side.

Spurs took a comfortable 2-0 aggregate lead over to the Croatian capital, but a second-half capitulation from Jose Mourinho’s side saw them lose 3-0 on the night and crash out of the competition.

There have been figures reported suggesting how much Tottenham would have to pay Mourinho if they were to sack him, however, Castles insisted the club has a ‘break clause’ in the 58-year-old’s contract.

He said: “And I think contrary to what has been reported that there’s no break clause in his contract, I’m told there is a break clause in the contract. So, the cost to dismiss him should Levy go down that route in the summer is less than the full remaining value on his contract. (25:11)

“I think more importantly for Tottenham is the decision that has to be made and what they do, whether they choose just to change coach, or whether they decide that actually that the squad needs an overhaul and needs some significant changes to achieve what Levy had targeted when Mourinho came into the club.”

The defeat has mounted more pressure on Mourinho after a poor run of form in recent months which has seen Spurs fall from the top of the league to eighth in the Premier League table.

TIF Thoughts on Castles comments…

The defeat of Thursday night was nothing short of catastrophic. These are the types of games that Mourinho was brought into Spurs for – just see it over the line and progress. Spurs play Manchester City in the final of the Carabao Cup next month which is now their last opportunity for Mourinho to win a trophy this season.

Something to note is that Castles says “whether they choose just to change coach”. From what he says it suggests it seems it is just a matter of time before Mourinho loses his job.
