Celtic pundit John Paul Mason has talked about Diego Laxalt and he believes that the Hoops need an upgrade on him in the summer.

This came after Mason’s appearance on an episode of the ‘A Celtic State of Mind’ podcast and the panel talked about various issues involving the Bhoys following the 1-1 draw in the Old Firm derby. Mason talked about Diego Laxalt and he believes that the Bhoys need a better player in the left-back position and it should be someone who has more height than the Uruguayan.

Laxalt had arrived at Celtic on loan from Milan in the summer of 2020 and since arriving at Parkhead, the defender has been in and out of the club’s first-team. He played the full 90 minutes in the Old Firm derby though and he is currently valued at £3.60m.

Mason believes that while Laxalt didn’t perform badly on Sunday, Celtic still need improvements on him in the future.

He said (13:00) “Laxalt’s not going to win you over from today, I still think we need an imposing, stronger guy playing in that position that’s got a bit more height. I’m not hyped at all but you look at what they had lined up at left-back today versus us, it’s a world of a difference.”

TIF Thoughts on Diego Laxalt…

Since arriving at the club, Laxalt has made 24 appearances in all competitions. In the Premiership, he has played 17 games, scoring once. In the Premiership, he has picked up a rating of 6.82. In the group stages of the Europa League, he had a rating of 6.96 (as per Whoscored).

While those are decent ratings in isolation, as many as 17 players have picked up better ratings than Laxalt in the Premiership for Celtic. One of them is Greg Taylor. Because of that, it is easy to see why Mason still isn’t too keen on Laxalt and why he wants a better player.
