In the summer of 2018, Celtic made multiple bids to sign McGinn from Hibernian. The third bid’s value stood at only £2 million, and he eventually joined Villa for a fee of £2.79 million a matter of weeks later.
In an interview, the £25.2m-rated McGinn has revealed that he had actually made up his mind to join Celtic but he took into account the quality of Hoops’ midfield at that point. Steve Bruce, who was at Villa back then, guaranteed him that he’d play every game (as per Daily Record).
“Can’t believe a Celtic season ticket holder chose Villa over Celtic.“
A lot of these Celtic fans still seem to regret the fact that the Hoops failed to sign McGinn in 2018.
For Villa in the Premier League, McGinn impressed last season while picking up an average rating of 7/10. Even in the current campaign, he’s done well for Dean Smith’s side, while gaining a rating of 6.9 and getting four assists (as per WhoScored).
Considering his performances, it is understandable why Celtic fans have regrets about McGinn but if he chose to join Villa, there’s nothing the Bhoys could’ve done about it.
