Celtic pundit Russell Boyce has delivered his verdict about Enzo Maresca’s suitability to the Parkhead job.

This came after Boyce appeared as a guest on the latest episode of the ‘A Celtic State of Mind’ podcast and the panel talked about a lot of different issues involving Celtic and their plans for next season. They also talked about managerial candidates and Boyce made it clear that he’s not convinced about Maresca and his suitability to the hotspot at Parkhead.

Maresca has been linked with the Celtic job in recent days but the Italian has remained ‘tight-lipped’ about his links with a Parkhead move because he is fully focused on his role with the Manchester City Under-23 side.

Would hiring Maresca guarantee success for Celtic?

Boyce believes that if Celtic had won the title this season, then there would have been no problems about hiring Maresca but it may not be a good move since there’s no credit in the bank this season.

The pundit said: “I’m not convinced that Enzo Maresca initially galvanises the support, that’s feeling so far disconnected from the club at present.

“That’s the difference. Celtic win ten in a row this year – Maresca, no bother, that’s fine. This is the problem, because you’re coming from a position behind, you’ve got to do more. This might be a great idea, this model may well be the perfect future, but because you’ve messed it up so badly this year, you’re starting with low credit in the bank instead of a lot of credit in the bank.”

TIF Thoughts on Enzo Maresca…

While 41-year-old Maresca had experience of playing first-team football with the likes of Fiorentina, Juventus, Malaga and Sampdoria, he is yet to manage at first-team level in his career. Having said that, he has been an assistant manager at Ascoli, Sevilla and West Ham United. His current points-per-match tally with the Man City Under-23s side is an impressive 2.09 (as per Transfermarkt).

Celtic, though, might need someone who’s more proven at the top level than Maresca is. The idea for them should be to return to the top of the table as soon as they can but because of Maresca’s lack of experience, that might not be guaranteed with him.
