The Athletic’s West Ham United journalist Roshane Thomas has made a claim about Fabian Balbuena and his future at the club.

Thomas appeared on the latest episode of the U Irons podcast following the Hammers’ 3-3 draw against Arsenal in the Premier League.

Recently, Balbuena’s agent talked about the player’s future at the London Stadium, saying that they are talking to multiple clubs and the defender will not continue at West Ham, instead opting to look for a move elsewhere in Europe. He revealed that there are two or three clubs interested in him and he could even move to another Premier League side (via Versus Radio).

Will Balbuena's departure negatively impact West Ham?

Thomas stated his belief that Moyes will have to think about this and play someone who actually wants to fight for the shirt.

The journalist said: “Balbuena – it’s a tough one right now. Because his agent has come out and said all sorts of crazy stuff. Like for example, for now, he’s not really a West Ham player. He’s sort of looking to move abroad. So Moyes will have to think about it, I think. Or play someone who’s more committed – someone who wants to be here for the long term.”

Nice easy one to start off with. How much do you think Declan Rice is worth?

TIF Thoughts on Balbuena…

Balbuena, who is currently valued at only £4.5m, has a contract that runs out in the summer. Considering that his valuation is low anyway, the Hammers won’t likely be making a huge loss on his reported £3.6m fee if the defender does leave on a free transfer.

He has played only 12 Premier League games this season and he’s actually the club’s highest-rated centre-back in the league campaign (as per WhoScored). This suggests that he’s more than just a decent squad player and he’s had a good season when he has been called upon.

So losing him might be a blow for Moyes’ men but if they replace him properly, they can soften the blow.
