TalkSPORT pundit and West Ham fan Ian Abrahams has claimed Hammers defender Craig Dawson should be in the reckoning for the England squad.

The 30-year-old was signed on loan in the summer transfer window, and has gone on to become one of the integral parts of the side as they make their push for Europe. He currently holds a WhoScored average rating of 6.94/10, which is the sixth-highest in the team, helped by the fact he’s started to add goals to his game, having grabbed three since the turn of the year.

And it’s this form that has started the conversation about whether or not Dawson should get a place at this summer’s European Championships – something that Abrahams, as heard on the TalkSPORT Daily podcast, thinks he more than deserves.

He said: “I liked Craig Dawson many years ago when he was at Rochdale, and then West Brom signed him. And I really thought he was unlucky not to get an England call-up. I’m gonna say something now which people will think is mad: I think that Gareth Southgate should be having a look at this fella for the Euros. I think he’s been absolutely sensational.”

TIF Thoughts on Ian Abrahams’ comments about Craig Dawson playing for England…

It certainly is admirable that Abrahams is sticking up for Dawson, but it’s likely going to be a fruitless endeavour.

That’s nothing against Dawson and the effort he has put in this season, but when you consider who he has in front of him for the England squad – the likes of Harry Maguire, Eric Dier and Tyrone Mings to name a few – there are a lot more established and experienced players at international level ahead of him in the pecking order.

So whilst his form might warrant selection, he would probably have to do something spectacular and hope that the form of the other players slips between now and the end of the season before he can truly be considered an option.
