These Tottenham Hotspur fans have been getting rather emotional following a post from their club’s official Twitter account.

It’s currently the international break, meaning that players from all different clubs all get together to focus on the needs of their respective nations for their respective qualifying campaigns. It also provides an opportunity for players to be reunited with former teammates, as was the case with the Belgium team.

The Tottenham Hotspur Twitter account posted this picture of current defender Toby Alderweireld alongside former Spurs man Jan Vertonghen. The latter, of course, left the club in the summer for Benfica, having been in north London since 2012.

And it was after Alderweireld signed in 2015 that the two really flourished together, with The Athletic arguing they were one of the best partnerships the club have had in recent times, pointing out how from December 2016 to August 2017, the pair went on a run of conceding seven goals in 17 Premier League games when starting together.

So when the fans saw the picture of those two together, it brought memories flooding back about the good times, and fans couldn’t contain themselves, with some demanding to see them back together at the club:

“Cool, gonna go cry now. Bye”

“We need Super Jan back we miss him”
“Wish he had prime Jan and Toby rn…”
“Don’t do this to us”
“Couldn’t care less if he’s not as good as he used to be we should have done everything to make sure Vertonghen didn’t leave, not to mention the respect he had in the changing room would have been crucial right now”
“It breaks my heart that he didn’t get a trophy with us. Top class player.”
“Who’s cutting onions?”

Is Alderweireld and Vertonghen the best centre-back partnership Spurs have ever had?

Yes

What Jose Mourinho would give to have the duo at their peak after some of the scorelines he’s had to put up with this season.
