Peterborough United’s Director of Football Barry Fry thinks that Tottenham Hotspur need to go and bring in ex-Posh forward Ivan Toney as a replacement for Harry Kane.

Toney has been in sensational form this season for Championship side Brentford, with 28 goals and 9 assists made all the more impressive by the fact this is his first year in the division having been signed from League One Peterborough for £5m.

And speaking in an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Fry thinks that he’s ready to take another step beyond that this summer, claiming that should the club decide to sell star man Kane, something that could be a reality this summer, that Toney would be able to fit the bill.

He said: “In my opinion, if Harry Kane left Tottenham, he should be their top target.

“He could go to clubs trying to compete to get into the Champions League next year and do a job, a brilliant job. No doubt in my mind whatsoever.”

Do you think Kane should leave Spurs this summer?

Yes

Yes

No

No

It could be argued it is a bit of a leap of faith to put that sort of pressure on his shoulders at this stage of his career, because not everyone makes the jump from the Championship and performs in the Premier League straight away. Even someone like Jamie Vardy took a year to adjust when he first made the move up in 2014/15.

Add to that the task of having to perform for a club likely to be chasing European football, replacing one of Spurs’ greatest ever goal scorers & their talisman for the past few years and those are some almighty big shoes to fill.

Not to say that it can’t be done, but Spurs may only get one shot to make the right decision when it comes to replacing or staying with Kane, and putting that faith in someone with only ten minutes of Premier League experience would be an awfully big risk.
