Rob Lee has revealed he doesn’t believe Southampton centre-back Jannik Vestergaard is the answer to Tottenham Hotspur’s defensive issues.

Despite Jose Mourinho’s men having the joint-third best defensive record in the Premier League this season, many have questioned the solidity of the north London outfit’s back four.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss has tried several combinations in the heart of the Spurs defence this season, but with little luck as the likes of Eric Dier and Matt Doherty have come under constant scrutiny.

According to The Mirror, the Portuguese manager is preparing a move for Denmark international Vestergaard this summer in order to solve Tottenham’s shaky defence.

However, in an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Lee disclosed his feelings towards the 28-year-old, suggesting he is far from a top-class operator.

He said: I’ve seen him play well, seen him play badly, so I wouldn’t go breaking the bank for him. I’d go and break the bank for Danny Ings, but for Vestergaard, no, not really. He’s not Virgil van Dijk, is he?”

TIF Thoughts on Vestergaard…

The 6’6 defender is set to enter the final 12 months of his contract at St. Mary’s over the summer and could be a reasonably priced upgrade on Tottenham’s current options in that particular position.

Toby Alderweireld is entering the twilight years of his career, Dier and Davinson Sanchez are yet to fully convince at this level, while Joe Rodon is still finding his feet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Vestergaard may not be on the same level as Virgil van Dijk, but Spurs fans are likely to be satisfied with a more reliable and consistent performer in the heart of defence.
