One of the games that Shearer spent some time talking about was Tottenham Hotspur’s 4-1 win over Crystal Palace in which Gareth Bale bagged himself a brace to make it six goals and three assists in his last six games in all competitions.

Bale opened the scoring when Harry Kane found him with a driven pass across the box, and he added his second in the second half via a header after Kane set him up again.

This led Shearer to wax lyrical over the Welshman.

He said: (51:35) “That is magnificent from Harry Kane, he puts it on a plate for Gareth Bale.

“You can tell he’s enjoying his football out wide whipping the ball into [Sergio] Reguilon [and] that should be in the back of the net.

“This was the best goal for me; he starts it, Bale, pushes it out to the left-hand-side but just watch his movement in there; he goes to the near post, doesn’t get it [but] look how quick he is to react from a brilliant header back from Harry Kane.”

Is Bale back to his best?

TIF Thoughts on Bale…

The 31-year-old, who is valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, had a very slow start on his return to Spurs as he played in just six of Tottenham’s first 23 league matches.

However, he has played at least some part in the last five and also contributed goals and assists.

Certainly, Shearer was impressed by Bale’s display against Palace, and it is clear that he is getting better and his form is picking up.

Bale is now Spurs’ second-top goalscorer in the league with five and is starting to share some of the load with Harry Kane, and Heung-min Son, which we think can only be a good thing as Spurs close the gap on the top four.
