Eurosport journalist Dean Jones has been speaking on the latest episode of Touchline Talk to talk all things football.

Newcastle United’s poor run of form which sees them struggling in 16th place was a topic of discussion with Steve Bruce’s future uncertain with the Magpies.

Jones touched on an article that has emerged suggesting Steven Gerrard could make a good replacement for Bruce as the manager on Tyneside.

On the topic of Gerrard switching Glasgow for Newcastle, Jones had this to say on the potential move.

He said: “I mean, maybe that’s a step down right now, I’m not sure, like from Rangers to Newcastle is probably looking like a step down.

“But ultimately, it’s the Premier League, which is the richest league in the world and it is still the place to be, there’s no doubt about that. And after what Gerrard’s done at Rangers, I don’t think it would scare him, the idea of going to Newcastle and turning that around now.”

Would Gerrard leave Rangers for NUFC?

Gerrard and his Rangers side wrapped up the Scottish Premiership last weekend after Celtic’s draw against Dundee United confirmed the blue side of Glasgow as champions.

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

The way Newcastle are going, it would certainly be a step down for Gerrard. Regardless of the league, it would be expected Gerrard would rather be challenging for another title in Scotland against Celtic than managing a Newcastle side which are in serious danger of not even playing in the top flight next season.
