Jetro Willems was only able to fulfill half of his season-long loan move to Newcastle United last season.

The Dutchman ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament against Chelsea in January 2020, ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign.

Over his 19 Premier League appearances, the wing-back had commendably scored twice and assisted two more.

He netted a sublime goal in a 3-1 defeat at Anfield and was also on target as the Magpies held Manchester City to a draw at St. James’ Park.

Willems had expressed his desire for the move to be made permanent, but no such clause was included in the deal (via Football-oranje) and he returned to parent club Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.

But now a Twitter exchange has sparked fresh pleas among the Newcastle faithful for Willems’ return.

After Willems wished Allan Saint-Maximin a happy birthday, the forward proceeded to relay a ‘we love you’ message from supporters.

Willems acknowledged the feelings of the Toon army, telling Saint-Maximin ‘they love us’.

Whether he will return to Tyneside in the future remains to be seen, but it is clear there is a lot of appreciation from both sides despite the Dutchman having such a short stint in the north-east.
