Newcastle United supporters have been reacting on Twitter after it was reported that Allan Saint-Maximin has spent a week recovering from injury in Monaco.

The 24-year-old winger sustained a groin problem in the 1-1 draw with Wolves at the end of February and has been absent from Newcastle’s last two fixtures.

However, according to the Daily Mail, the exciting forward was given permission by the St. James’ Park hierarchy to travel to the principality for ‘checks’, although some of his teammates were surprised that he was allowed to take such an extensive break.

Saint-Maximin, who is on a wage of £38k per week, has become a key player for the Magpies since signing from Nice 18 months ago, but multiple injury issues have restricted the Frenchman to just 16 top-flight appearances throughout the current campaign.

It’s not the first negative story to come out of the club in recent weeks, with Steve Bruce getting involved in a heated exchange with midfielder Matt Ritchie, and it’s another unwelcome distraction for Bruce’s men, who are embroiled in a battle to beat the drop.

“Joke of a club.”

@liamrobinson94

“Sounds like he is speaking to Monaco before he moves there in the summer”

@GEORDIEEVENUS1

“Let’s face it he won’t be a Newcastle player next season”

@JohnsonP1977

“Clubs a bunch of amateurs joke!!”

@MikeWhi69738754

“He is a maverick like Dennis Rodman, let him do what he wants.”

“Already looking to sell our assets. ASM, Almiron, Wilson and probably Lewis too. Someone might even take Joelinton off us. Can we get 60m-70m for all to negate the Championship drop?”

@SmartphoneWars_

“Doesn’t matter, no takeover and he’s away come June.”

@GosyGosling

Newcastle take on Brighton in a relegation six-pointer over the weekend, and this a potentially harmful sidetrack that Bruce can ill afford.
