TalkSport pundit Trevor Sinclair has made a huge claim about the battle between club and country when it comes to the fitness of Virgil Van Dijk.
But speaking in a press conference (via Sports Mole) recently whilst on international duty, Netherlands boss Frank De Boer seemed to put pressure on Van Dijk to be back for this summer’s European Championships, stating: “I’m not counting on it right now. But if it did happen, it would be fantastic for the national team.”
But speaking on TalkSport White and Jordan show (1:05:31), Sinclair seemed to take issue with De Boer’s comments and insisted that the national team needed to back away from the situation and allow Van Dijk to rest for next season:
“Now, I think Frank De Boer and the Netherlands medical staff have got to be very careful with this because this could end up in court. You’ve got to think about the player’s recovery, and I mean full recovery, and the welfare. It’s got to be paramount. He’s a top top player worth 100 million-plus whatever he’s worth.
“And for me, this stinks of win at all costs for Frank De Boer, you’ve got to think about the player’s welfare. I think the best thing is the cautious approach. Get a full preseason, and let’s get Virgil Van Dijk back to stay back. Not just come back to then break down again because he’s been rushed back.”
Do you think we will see Van Dijk play again for Liverpool this season?
TIF Thoughts on Trevor Sinclair’s comments about Virgil Van Dijk’s fitness…
Sinclair is right here, although he may have taken things a little too far with his court comments. The thing that Liverpool need the most is for Van Dijk to be fully rested ahead of next season and without the risk of re-injuring himself so soon after his return.
That way they can put up a proper challenge for the Premier League title, without having to scramble together some make-shift options at the back like they have this season.
