Duncan Castles has been speaking on the latest episode of The Transfer Window podcast, where he revealed Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has signed a pre-contract agreement with Barcelona.

The Dutch international was heavily linked with the Camp Nou side over the summer after his former national team boss Ronald Koeman took charge of the Catalan giants.

A transfer fee couldn’t be agreed between Barca and the reigning Premier League champions, however, and Wijnaldum has gone on to play a key role for the Reds this season, featuring in every league game for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

The 30-year-old’s current deal with the Reds runs out in a few months’ time, though, leaving him free to commit his future to another side and according to Castles, Wijnaldum has done just that.

He said: “Information I have from Barcelona is that the deal is now agreed. He has signed a pre-contract with the club and he will be a Barcelona player in the summer, which I think is important.

“It’s a signal of their faith in [Ronald] Koeman, whose position was in doubt when the presidential elections started, and who’s, I think, gained the faith of [Joan] Laporta with recent results and the way he’s handled Lionel Messi.”

TIF Thoughts on Wijnaldum…

Wijnaldum has enjoyed five very successful seasons at Anfield, winning the Champions League and the Premier League during his time with the club.

Although Klopp’s charges have endured a tough campaign this time around, they are arguably still one of the best sides across the continent, and leaving them is a bold move by the Dutchman.

Nevertheless, the draw of playing for a club with a status like Barcelona’s is arguably huge for any footballer, and at 30, Wijnaldum may feel this is his last chance to play for another European superclub.
