Leeds United fans have been reacting to comments made by Noel Whelan about Tyler Roberts and his place in the current side.

Roberts was in and out of the team in the early part of the season, so much so that there was the possibility he would leave the club in January in order to get some playing time. The Welshman has started to get a run of games under his belt recently though, starting the last four under Marcelo Bielsa, all of them in the ‘number ten role’ behind centre-forward Patrick Bamford.

Speaking in a recent interview with Football Insider, Whelan questioned whether or not he deserved to play in that position, especially when they have other options available.

He said: “But if you ask 100 Leeds fans who they would prefer in that position, Rodrigo or Tyler Roberts, they would all say Rodrigo all day long. Roberts didn’t do anything wrong but I just think it brings a different dimension to the game when Rodrigo’s out there.”

Roberts already has something of a strained relationship with the supporters, and when Whelan’s comments were relayed to them on the Leeds Insider Facebook page, some fans took them as a sign that he shouldn’t really have a part to play at the club moving forward:

With just two assists and zero goals to his name this season, he’s going to have to do something in order to convince people that he still has a future at the club.
