Arsenal insider Charles Watts has spoken about the club and their plans for Mikel Arteta.

The Spaniard currently has a contract at the club until the summer of 2023, but given some of the pressure that he has been under at various times during his reign at the club, you would be forgiven for thinking he wouldn’t make it through the duration of it.

However, speaking on the latest edition of his show, in which Watts discussed the contract situation surrounding a number of players at the club, the journalist went on to talk about the situation with the head coach, stating that a new deal could be on the horizon for him.

He said: “Mikel Arteta as well, something has to happen with his contract at Arsenal very, very soon. Is he going to sign a new one? Are Arsenal gonna offer him a new one? You would think absolutely yes.

“No matter what your opinions of Arteta are and the job he’s doing, as far as I’m aware, Arsenal are very, very happy with him, and they all want to keep him, so they’re going to have to sit down with him at the end of the season and discuss a new contract.”

TIF Thoughts on Charles Watts’ comments about Mikel Arteta and his contract…

It’s interesting that Watts should be talking about a new contract for Arteta right about now given the season Arsenal have had, which can arguably only be rescued by them winning the Europa League, because the chances of anything happening through the Premier League look rather slim.

Indeed journalist and Arsenal fan Jordan Jarrett-Bryan has recently argued that Arteta is on borrowed time at the club, and that if things start badly next season, he could be under pressure again.

So a new contract would be a huge leap of faith, especially if they don’t win the Europa League this season. However, that might just be what Arteta and the club need in order to prove that they believe in his ability to turn things around and set them up for the long term.
