Ex-Hull City striker Dean Windass has suggested that Leeds United should make a move for Crystal Palace full-back Patrick van Aanholt this summer.

The 30-year-old’s current contract with the Selhurst Park outfit is set to expire in a few month’s time, meaning he could be available on a free transfer, and Windass believes the Whites should take advantage.

Northern Ireland international Stuart Dallas has played several games at left-back this season but is more comfortable in a midfield role, while Marcelo Bielsa’s other option Ezgjan Alioski has been strongly linked with a move to Galatasaray.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Windass disclosed how the capture on Van Aanholt could benefit Dallas by releasing him to play in his natural position.

He said: You talk about Dallas, who’s done a fantastic job, but it’s square pegs round holes, he’s not a left-back. Yes, he can play left-sided, but the energy he gives, he’s had an unbelievable season. Any club could take Dallas because you know how versatile he is.

“The lad from Palace is naturally a left-back and I’m sure that he won’t be the only one to sign for Leeds this summer.”

TIF Thoughts on Van Aanholt…

The Dutch international defender would add some Premier League experience to Bielsa’s backline if he does make the switch to Elland Road this summer, having played over 200 top-flight games throughout his career.

Leeds have impressed since returning to English football’s top table following a 16-year absence, but the West Yorkshire outfit have one of the leakiest defences in the division, and adding someone like Van Aanholt could help them shore things up next season.

It remains to be seen whether the former Sunderland man will be offered a new contract by Palace before the campaign is out, though he’s unlikely to be short of offers ahead of the upcoming window.
