Derby County journalist Ryan Conway has been sharing his thoughts on Rams midfielder Beni Baningime and his role in the team.

This comes after Conway recently uploaded a video onto his YouTube channel where he spoke about a range of subjects concerning the Midlands club, including their recent 1-0 defeat against Stoke City in the Championship.

An easy one to kick off our quiz on the 2020 summer transfer window in the EFL, which player left Birmingham City to join Borussia Dortmund?

On the subject of Baningime and his role in Wayne Rooney’s squad, Conway had this to say on the matter. (28.33)

He said: “Basically, he’s had to get up to match speed, not that he was injured or anything like that, I think because of the position he plays in the middle, Rooney wants them to get through a lot of work box-to-box and I think Baningime was more of a sitter and a destroyer and just sat and screened and I think Rooney wanted to get his fitness up so he could go box-to-box and help out in that way, but yeah, I think he does need to start.

“The start he got against Cardiff, I actually don’t think he was that bad, he certainly wasn’t the worst player out on the pitch, in fact, I maybe thought he was Derby’s best player that night and that was a low bar, don’t get me wrong, that was a low bar, but if you’re the best of a bad bunch, you’re still the best and then he just went straight out of the squad again, but yeah, I think Baningime probably does deserve to get a start in these last these last eight games or so.”

Derby signed Baningime back in the previous January transfer window from Premier League side Everton until the end of the current season.

Since he joined up with the squad at Pride Park, the 22-year-old, who is currently valued at £900k, has made just two appearances for Derby in the Championship (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts on Ryan Conway’s comments on Baningime…

Given how Baningime hasn’t made an appearance for Derby in the Championship since that 4-0 defeat against Cardiff City as Conway mentioned in his video, this suggests that Rooney is not overly impressed with the midfield man.

Do you think Baningime should start for Derby?

No

Taking into account how Baningime only managed to earn himself a match rating of 6.16/10 for his performance against the Welsh side, making him one of the lowest-rated players that played the full 90 minutes for Derby on the day, this probably explains why Rooney hasn’t picked him to play since then, despite Conway’s thoughts on the matter.

Moving forward, unless Baningime gets some significant playing time from now until the end of the season, he could be in danger of his loan spell with the Rams being fairly underwhelming.
