Former Aston Villa forward Dion Dublin has hailed the signing of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez on Saturday night’s Match of the Day.

Villa signed the goalkeeper from Arsenal last summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £15m, and Dublin believes he has made a massive difference since arriving.

Dean Smith’s side only kept seven clean sheets throughout the whole of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign, however, Martinez has already kept 14 clean sheets in this season’s campaign.

On the subject of Villa securing yet another shutout, Dublin had this to say on their former Gunners shot-stopper.

He said: “He has made a massive difference – a great signing.”

“The back four are happy to have somebody behind them that they really trust, it makes a big difference to the defence.”

Martinez is in the race for the Golden Glove this season, his Villa side has only conceded 27 goals this season – compared to 67 in total last season.

TIF Thoughts on Dion Dublin’s comments on Martinez…

Dublin could not have spoken highly enough of Martinez, and it’s clear to see why. Aston Villa struggled last season and only just avoided relegation. Smith did not have a nailed-down starting goalkeeper last season and Villa ended up signing Pepe Reina on loan last January.

However, this season, only Manchester City (15) have more clean sheets than Villa in the league and even without star player, Jack Grealish, Martinez is managing to keep Villa a difficult side to play against.
