Celtic podcaster Hamish Carton has recently discussed the club’s links with a move for Fergal Harkin.

Carton recently hosted the latest episode of the Grand Auld podcast and the panel discussed the latest on-goings at the Parkhead-based club. One topic of discussion was the club’s links with a move for Fergal Harkin, who is being eyed as a potential director of football by the Hoops. Carton believes that this is a positive sign from the club and Harkin’s appointment could be what the Bhoys need.

Harkin is currently Man City’s football partnerships manager and as a player, he plied his trade with Leicester City for around 18 months and he even played in the same team as Celtic boss Neil Lennon. He has previously worked at Nike for eight years and in 2009, he was appointed by Man City’s scouting department (as per the Daily Record).

Would Harkin be a good appointment for Celtic?

Carton believes that next Celtic CEO Dominic McKay wants more footballing brains at the club than Peter Lawwell wanted during his stint at Parkhead.

He said (23:00): “It sounds, for me, looking from the outside, the main thing it looks like he’s going to bring his real intelligence and modern Premier League methods and practices that are evidently so badly needed at Celtic. I think it’s really interesting from these reports Dominic McKay looks like he’s keen to bring in a football brain to help him which is something we just never would have got with Lawwell.

“Whether that came out of stubbornness, you know, an ego on Peter Lawwell’s part, and a feeling that he could do it all. I think it’s really positive that from the looks of things Dominic McKay is going to look to bring in someone to help him with the football operations because that’s the one huge, top concern, red flag about Dominic McKay looking in as that he has no experience at all of a football club, conducting transfers, youth development scouting that kind of thing. And so I think that’s really positive.”

TIF Thoughts on Carton’s comments on Harkin…

Considering that Harkin has been described as a ‘loan guru’ recently, it might be a reflection of the fact that he does have a footballing brain. He has also been referred to as a ‘transfer guru’ by the same report.

The report from the Daily Record claims that Harkin would bring to the plate a vast amount of knowledge of players and he has a big contacts book as well.

In recent years, Celtic and Manchester City have been involved in multiple transfers. This includes Olivier Ntcham, Patrick Roberts, Jeremie Frimpong and Daniel Arzani. Because of Harkin’s footballing knowledge and his contacts with City, it is easy to see why Celtic are eyeing him up.
