The Athletic’s Celtic-oriented journalist Kieran Devlin has recently talked about the club’s act of missing out on Ivan Toney in the summer.

Devlin appeared as a guest on the latest episode of the Celtic Huddle podcast and the panel discussed multiple issues involving the Hoops. Devlin talked about the club’s transfers and recruitment under Nick Hammond. He talked about the fact that Celtic missed out on the chance to sign Toney in the summer. The journalist believes that the situation isn’t as black and white as people might thing, especially since Toney is impressing at Brentford.

In the summer transfer window, Celtic had a bid rejected for the striker. As they missed out on the striker, Brentford signed Toney for an undisclosed fee.

Devlin talked about the failed move for Toney, saying that it isn’t as simple as saying that if Toney had ended up Celtic, he’d have been a certain success.

The journalist said (8:24): “I think one of the things most recently that people are talking about is missing out on Ivan Toney. It’s quite hard, Brentford are such a well oiled machine for how they do things. I’m not sure it’s as black and white as Toney would’ve been a massive success and Ajeti would’ve been a massive failure at Brentford. I think it’s slightly more complicated than that.”

TIF Thoughts on Toney…

In the current season, Toney has been on fire for the Bees, scoring 24 times in the Championship and assisting nine times as well (as per Transfermarkt).

Even in the League One last season for Peterborough United, the former Newcastle man impressed for the Posh. He scored 24 times in the league, picking up six assists as well for them.

So there is clearly enough evidence to suggest that Toney could’ve been a good signing for the Hoops, considering how he has done at various levels already.
