Mark Douglas has offered up his views on what Newcastle United need to look for in the summer window.

Steve Bruce’s men are going through a bit of an injury crisis at the moment, and arguably no other position has been affected more than centre-back. Indeed, Bruce revealed today that Fabian Schär will be out for eight weeks, whilst it is ‘fingers crossed’ for the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Federico Fernandez.

And speaking on the latest Everything is Black and White Podcast (33:38), it was no surprise to see Douglas stressing one position in particular when it comes to where the club need to invest:

“I think they could do with bringing in another centre-back, I know that the scouts will be looking at that across Europe and especially even in the Championship they’ve been looking at players who could potentially come in and add something you know younger players. But they cost money at the moment and Newcastle won’t have a lot of that in the summer. They’ll obviously have the money that they get from the TV revenue but they’re not going to have the extra revenue that you get from the crowds and things like that as well.”

TIF Thoughts on Mark Douglas’ comments about the need for a new centre-back

It’s no secret that the squad is in desperate need of an overhaul, especially considering that it is one of the oldest in the division right now, and having conceded the third-most goals in the division, Douglas is right to discuss the centre-back issue first and foremost.

But whether or not they’ll be able to bring in anyone of any quality is a different matter, and that’s where the potential takeover becomes such an import factor in all this. Whether or not they’ll be bringing in more of the same quality players that they have at their disposal already, or if they’ll finally be able to take a step up by being able to fund transfers for someone who can take them forward as a club.
