Newcastle United fans slammed the performance of Dwight Gayle during their game against Chelsea.

Gayle was handed his first league start of the campaign by Steve Bruce for the visit to Stamford Bridge, though it appears his efforts were appreciated by the fans.

With WhoScored crediting the forward with just 16 touches all night – the lowest tally among the starting XI – it seems as if Gayle was indeed a rather peripheral figure during the match.

That may have been an opinion shared by Bruce as he was later hauled off in the 63rd minute with Joelinton taking his place – but not before Toon fans had their say on what was a rather forgettable evening for Gayle:

“Not up for debate – Dwight Gayle is the worst player in our squad.”

“Sorry but Dwight Gayle offers absolutely nothing”
“Dwight Gayle is a decent Championship striker has never been good enough. Not knocking the lad but this isn’t his level.”
“Also, just because he didn’t cost £40m, Dwight Gayle isn’t a good player, and his attitude stinks”
“Gayle is a pedestrian. He’s completely disinterested. To say he’s on the lookout for another contract as well is laughable”
“Can see why Gayle doesn’t really get a game. Very slight and no presence at all. Couldn’t hold up an ice cream on a hot day, let alone a football.”

Would you offer Dwight Gayle a new deal at Newcastle?

Yes

No

No

Brought into the side following the injury to Callum Wilson, it was always going to be hard for him going up against a side that headed into the game having conceded the joint-second fewest goals in the league, but it sounds as if he didn’t do himself any favours either way.
