Paul Gorst has provided fans with an update on Virgil Van Dijk’s recovery efforts.

The Dutchman’s injury has rocked Liverpool’s season, and whilst not the only reason that they find themselves so off the pace in the title race, it has without a doubt been a major factor for why they have been at times so poor this season.

But, speaking on the Blood Red Podcast, Gorst revealed that Van Dijk is back on Merseyside after some months abroad, and that there could still be an opportunity for Liverpool fans to see him at some point before the end of the current campaign:

“He’s back in the UK, back on Merseyside. He’s spent much of the last two months in Dubai, but he’s now back on Merseyside, back training at the AXA Centre, which however way you want to look at that, is probably good news.

“Jürgen Klopp said a couple of weeks ago that his progress was really promising. And then he kind of hinted that he might not play again the week before last.  I think he might have just said that in a way to buy himself some time and avoid questions every week about it going forward. So hopefully, there is space for him at the end of the season, even if it’s just for a handful of games just to get him back in the fold. And then he can have a real good pre-season and go from there.”

TIF Thoughts on Paul Gorst’s comments about Virgin Van Dijk’s recovery…

Whilst Gorst might be optimistic about Van Dijk coming back by the end of the season, Liverpool really need to be careful with how they handle his comeback, which should really only happen if they have something to fight for.

The last thing that the club need is for him to reinjure himself unnecessarily and find himself out of pre-season or indeed the first few months of the next campaign where they’ll effectively be behind the eight-ball again and could find themselves playing catch-up in the early parts of the season.
