Aston Villa journalist Ashley Preece has been sharing his praise for Villa midfielder Morgan Sanson and his cameo appearance during the club’s 0-0 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend.

This comes after Preece recently made an appearance on a special Q&A episode of the Birmingham Mail’s Claret & Blue Podcast where he answered a number of questions relating to Dean Smith’s side.

First up in this Gareth Barry quiz, which club did Villa sign the midfielder from?

On the topic of Sanson, who replaced Ross Barkley during the second half of the draw against Graham Potter’s side, Preece had this to say about the Frenchman.

He said: “I thought Sanson showed more than Barkley did at the weekend when he came on.

“Had a real energy about him and he wants to prove a point and he’s chomping at the bit to get that starting shirt off Barkley, so [a] really interesting one for Sunday now, for Smith’s team.”

Villa signed Sanson during the recent January transfer window from French club Marseille for a fee of £14.22 million.

Since arriving at Villa Park, the 26-year-old, who is currently valued at £18 million, has made two appearances for Villa in the Premier League but has yet to start a game for the club (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts on Ashley Preece’s comments on Sanson…

With Preece sharing his praise for Sanson’s 14-minute cameo appearance against Brighton, it will be interesting to see whether or not Smith will hand the Frenchman his first start for the club in their upcoming Premier League match against Leicester City at the weekend.

Would you start Sanson against Leicester?

No

In our view, with Sanson having not been able to score a goal or provide an assist in either of the two albeit brief league appearances he’s made for Villa off the bench, given Preece’s claim that he is ready to prove a point and get his first start for the club, perhaps starting him against Leicester would give him a good opportunity to show what he can do when given a chance from the start, with Barkley posting just one league goal contribution since November.
