Lawrence Connolly appeared on a recent edition of A Celtic State of Mind, joining Paul John Dykes and Natasha Meikle to discuss all of the latest Celtic news.

The panel spent some time discussing recent Celtic transfer news and rumours during the show, and one topic that they touched on was the possibility of the Hoops’ centre-forward Odsonne Edouard being sold, with the Frenchman having recently been linked with a £35m move to Premier League side West Ham United (via the Daily Star), as they seek to replace Sebastien Haller, who left the east London club for Ajax earlier this month

Which club did Brown join Celtic from?

While discussing Edouard’s potential departure, Connolly shared that he thinks Celtic’s largest shareholder, Dermot Desmond, may be planning to cash in on Edouard and stars like him this month and wait until the summer to reinvest in the hope that the transfer market is weaker then than it is now, and the Glasgow club can get more bang for their buck.

The Celtic pundit said: “Obviously, the big rumour is Eddy for £35m to West Ham, thinking this season’s beyond us, cash in just now while those assets are maybe at a high because once we hit the summer, clubs are going to be struggling.

“Maybe Dermot’s thinking it’s better to invest that money in the summer. Get it when the market’s a bit higher just now and go in the summer. I think it’s definitely a possibility if that’s what Dermot wants.”

TIF Thoughts on what Connolly had to say about Desmond’s potential plan…

Given that the ongoing global pandemic has harmed football clubs’ finances and resulted in transfer fees plummeting, it may be understandable why Connolly believes this may be Desmond’s plan and it will be interesting to see if the Hoops do end up cashing in on Edouard in the last week of the transfer window.

The Glasgow club has been knocked out of Europe, the Scottish League Cup and their chances of winning a potentially historic 10th straight Scottish top-flight title this term look slim, with their Old Firm rivals Rangers pulling away at the top of the Premiership

So, perhaps it would make sense for Desmond and the Hoops to write this season off and plan ahead like this, to boost their chances of enjoying a more positive campaign next season and it will be interesting to see if Connolly proves to be correct in his suspicion of Desmond’s intentions.
