The Sunday Mail’s chief football writer Scott McDermott appeared on the latest edition of the Record Rangers podcast, during which he spent some time talking about all things relating to the Glasgow club’s transfer business.

On the topic of the Gers’ future transfer plans, the journalist revealed that signing young players on free transfers is going to be an area that Rangers put more emphasis on in the transfer market in the future.

How well do you remember Rangers' 2020/21 season so far? We'll start you off with an easy one... Rangers beat Aberdeen 1-0 in the opening gameweek of the Premiership, but which player scored the only goal of the game?

McDermott explained that the Gers’ sporting director, Ross Wilson, is behind this transfer plan, with his knowledge and contacts set to play a key role in helping the Glasgow club to make more signings of this type.

The journalist said: “For too long now, probably because of the way Rangers have been set up as a club – the difficulties, the kind of turmoil that they went through – they’ve not really been in a position to scout properly, have that kind of network in place, where they were on top of available Bosman signings.

“Obviously Ross Wilson going in – a lot more clued up – that’s obviously a big part of his job, we know how good his kind of network is from his time down south, so it’s no surprise to me that’s now an area that they’re looking at – free transfers, young players that they can get in, coming to the end of their contracts, with the hope of, in a few years time, making serious money on it.”

TIF Thoughts on what McDermott had to say about Wilson’s transfer plan…

When the accounts of Rangers and their Old Firm rivals Celtic for the latest financial year were released in late-2020, one key difference between the two club’s finances which was pointed out by football finance expert Kieran Maguire on Twitter was that the Gers are generating far less revenue via player sales than Celtic are.

If the Gers want to rectify this, then it would seem like a smart move to go down this route of securing more young, promising players’ signatures on free transfers, as they did during the last summer transfer window when they snapped up English left-back Calvin Bassey on a free transfer after he departed from Leicester City, with a view to selling them on at a profit in the future.

Given that Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has claimed that Steven Gerrard has contacted him to declare his interest in signing 23-year-old Scott Wright on a free transfer in the summer when his current deal expires, it seems as though Wilson’s plan is already in motion and it will be interesting to see what deals of this kind the club can get done in the future.
