Scott McDermott has admitted that there could be interest from other clubs in signing Rangers defender Filip Helander in the summer transfer window.

Helander has made 36 appearances in total for Rangers, since signing for the Scottish side back in 2019 from Bologna. He has gone on to make 18 appearances in this year’s campaign, as Rangers continue to impress in the Scottish Premiership.

Steven Gerrard’s side are currently sat top of the table, and are 23 points clear of rivals Celtic after their opening 26 matches of the season.

Rangers have recently completed a deal to sign Jack Simpson, which has raised questions as to whether the defender will push someone further down the pecking order at Ibrox.

Speaking on the Record Rangers Podcast (23:50), McDermott felt as though Helander was Rangers’ best defender in terms of positioning, before revealing that there could be interest in the defender’s services in the summer transfer window.

“I think he showed the other night how good of a defender he is. In terms of his defensive positioning, he’s probably the best that Rangers have got but I suppose it’ll depend on whether there is any bids for him.

“Apart from one poor night in Benfica, he’s been really good for Rangers in the Europa League. There might be interest in him in the summer and Rangers might be aware of this at the moment.”

Helander and his Rangers team-mates are set to return to action on Wednesday evening, when they host St Johnstone, who are currently sat eighth in the Scottish Premiership after their opening 26 matches of this year’s campaign.

TIF’s thoughts on McDermott’s recent transfer prediction on Filip Helander heading towards the second-half of this year’s campaign….

Helander has really impressed with Rangers this season as the club’s seventh highest rated player with a very respectable rating of 7.24 (WhoScored), as well as ranking second for clearances per game and fourth for tackles per game.

He has had brief spells out of the team, but will be hoping he can solidify his place in the starting XI on a more regular basis from now until the end of this year’s campaign. Even with the arrival of Jack Simpson, we wouldn’t expect to see the youngster replace Helander in the side anytime soon, as he’s an experienced defender that has already performed to the required standard with Steven Gerrard’s men.
