Supporters of Celtic have recently called for Neil Lennon to unleash young Scottish centre-back Stephen Welsh for the Hoops.
On Tuesday, it was the player’s 21st birthday, and to mark the occasion, the club shared an image of the defender alongside a birthday message (as per Celtic).
The defender’s birthday comes at a time when the Bhoys are struggling in the league, having gone without a win in their previous three Premiership games (per Transfermarkt).
Furthermore, Lennon’s side is currently trailing their Old Firm rivals in the table by a whopping 21 points, although they do have three games in hand (per BBC).
Due to this, lots of Celtic fans were keen to see Welsh unleashed for the Hoops in some upcoming games.
After the birthday post was shared on Twitter, lots of fans flocked to it to air their desire to see Welsh get some first-team minutes.
So, what did these Celtic fans have to say following the club’s post on Stephen Welsh?
“Get him in the side from now until the summer n see what he’s about! I’d rather see him in the side than a loanee fae the EPL”
“maybe should’ve played him on Wednesday instead of Bitton”
The 21-year-old defender has until the summer of 2023 on his existing deal at Parkhead and a market value of £180,000 according to Transfermarkt.
Should Neil Lennon play Stephen Welsh in some upcoming games?
Yes, he should play
No, he's not ready
“Play him then”
“Good player that should be given more games like Soro and Turnbull. oh by the way LENNONOUT !!”
During his senior career, the youngster has only made six first-team appearances for the Hoops, in which he has neither scored nor assisted a goal (per Transfermarkt).
Aside from his games for the Bhoys the youngster also has senior experience elsewhere, with Welsh having played 18 first-team games for Greenock Morton, in which he scored once.
“Use him instead of bitton i beg”
“Now give the young man a run in the team and a chance !! He is better than our 60k a week loanee !!”
“He’s old enough now , him and big bro Ajer in from the start.”
As can be seen in these responses from Celtic fans, many of them were very clear that they want to see the youngster play for the Hoops more often.
