Michael Gannon has questioned Celtic’s summer signing Albian Ajeti for his displays this season.
The Swiss international signed for the club in the summer window in a £4.5m move from West Ham United, but having got off to a fast start in Scotland with five goals in his first six games, he has failed to find the back of the net since then, and has recently found himself reduced to a mere substitute.
Speaking on the latest edition of the Record Celtic Podcast, Gannon was talking about how the summer signings that Neil Lennon’s men made haven’t been good enough, and one of the players that he picked out was Ajeti:
“The signings haven’t been good enough. I mean Albian Ajeti, who knows? Still doesn’t look fit. He looks like a very expensive Nadir Çiftçi to me.”
Has Ajeti been a poor signing for Celtic?
TIF Thoughts on Gannon’s opinion about Albian Ajeti…
Gannon’s words are perhaps a bit harsh all things considered, after all, he has already managed to beat Çiftçi’s goal tally from his stay at Parkhead, with the Turk only managing to score four in 26 appearances. It is also probably a little too early to be judging someone like this having only been here for just over half a season – there is still plenty of time for him to come good, and that’s really what the second half of the season needs to be.
With the league title race for this season looking like a lost cause, all attention needs to be focused on what is going to happen next campaign, and the evidence shows that Ajeti deserves to be given more time to see if he can make something of himself.
If he can get the form back that he did at the start of the season, then he deserves the chance to stick around, but if that turns out just to be a flash in the pan, then it might be time to think about moving on from him.
