West Ham United are on course for one of their best seasons in recent memory as they currently sit 4th in the Premier League, with Durham saying that this campaign can compare to their 7th place finish in 2015/16, their final campaign at Upton Park.
During that season, there was one standout player for the Hammers, and that was Payet. That season was certainly something special for the Frenchman, winning the Premier League Player of the Year award at the London Football Awards, as well as being voted into the PFA Team of the Year, having scored nine goals and registering twelve assists in the league.
And speaking on the TalkSPORT Daily Podcast, Durham thinks that the Czech midfielder is having that same sort of impact for David Moyes’ men that Payet did all those seasons ago:
“He’s an absolutely different kind of player. But in terms of the impact, Soucek is the Payet this season for West Ham, isn’t he? I mean, he’s unbelievable.”
Has Soucek been West Ham's best player this season?
TIF Thoughts on Adrian Durham comparing Tomas Soucek with Dimitri Payet…
There are certainly some places where you can’t compare the two players in terms of how they play given their differences in position, but when it comes to the impact on the team, there certainly are comparisons to be made.
Durham’s words are certainly backed up not just by the number of goals Soucek has scored this season, currently standing at seven but also the importance of them. Two of the goals were late winners against Fulham and Everton, whilst also managing to grab an equaliser late on against Brighton and Hove Albion.
Points that have proved crucial in getting them this far, and if he can keep it up, then who knows how far it can take them?
