Football journalist David Ornstein has been sharing some details on Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli and his current situation at the north London club.
This comes after Ornstein recently co-hosted the latest episode of The Athletic’s Ornstein & Chapman Podcast where he spoke about the biggest talking points surrounding the Premier League.
On the subject of Alli, his current situation at Spurs and whether or not a potential move away from the club could be on the table, Ornstein had this to say on the matter.
He said: “I think Dele Alli would like to leave Tottenham, I think probably his preference would be permanent, but a loan deal would also, of course, be an option, perhaps a more realistic option because, throughout this process, Daniel Levy has showed no desire to let Dele Alli leave who’s under contract until 2024.
“He seems to be a fan of his but [Jose] Mourinho less so clearly in terms of where Dele Alli and his style of play, his role, fits into Mourinho’s structure and strategy and plan for the team.
“It will come down to Daniel Levy. He’s the one who holds the power here, Dele Alli I’m sure will push for a move if he’s still not playing but Daniel Levy will have to decide if he’s willing to sanction that in a season where clubs will be getting injuries, they’ve got fixture congestion, it’s going to be a truncated season ahead of the Euros.”
Spurs signed the 24-year-old back in 2015 from MK Dons for a fee of £5.97 million. Since then, Alli, who is currently valued at £34.2 million, has made 233 appearances for Jose Mourinho’s side across all competitions in which he has scored 64 goals and provided 56 assists (per Transfermarkt).

Given how Alli has made just 11 appearances for Spurs across all competitions so far this season with only four coming in the Premier League, it’s not surprising that Ornstein has said the midfielder wants to leave the club and could push for a move away if he doesn’t start playing regularly.

With French side Paris Saint-Germain having previously shown their interest in signing Alli and now that they have recently appointed former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino as manager, there’s every possibility that Alli could reunite with his former coach in Paris and start playing regular football again.
In our view, unless Alli can get assurances at Tottenham that he will get more playing time throughout the remainder of the season, maybe moving away on a temporary loan deal where he would get minutes on the pitch would be ideal for the Englishman.
