Liam Kennedy has been speaking on the latest edition of NUFC Matters with Steve Wraith about all things Newcastle United.
One of the topics that the Shields Gazette reporter spent some time on was transfers and potential signings for the Toon.
One player linked with a return to Newcastle is Jetro Willems, with the 26-year-old said to be available for a cut-price deal because his contract is set to expire in June this year.
Willems was on loan for the 2019-20 season on Tyneside until he suffered an ACL injury that ruled him out from January onwards.
Still, it seems like he is keen to return to Newcastle, and Kennedy thinks that the deal could happen but also that it might not.
He said: “I have had sources play the whole deal down to me; I have had other sources tell me the exact opposite.
“I think the player would come back in a heartbeat.
“I have mentioned it on here before, [I] can’t really go into much more detail but there has been a quite significant barrier in the way of any deal getting done.
“For Jetro Willems to come back through the door, Newcastle would have to lose a first-team player, and in that position, I am struggling to see who would probably go.
“So, I don’t know; it is one that’s worth watching; it’s bubbling away.”
Do you think Willems will end up at Newcastle?
Yes, we will sign him
No, we won't get him
TIF Thoughts on Willems potentially returning to Newcastle…
While the Dutchman was on Tyneside he made 20 appearances in all competitions and popped up with two goals and three assists, so he was a useful player for Newcastle, and if they could do the deal, we would like to see Willems back on Tyneside.
However, if Kennedy is to be believed, it doesn’t look like it will be a straightforward deal to complete, so we will just have to see if anything changes as the window goes on.
