Newcastle United fans on Twitter have been responding to the latest news concerning Toon striker Dwight Gayle.

This comes after Newcastle news Twitter account @NUFC360 shared a post on their page relaying news originally published in an article from The Athletic.

Starting with an easy one, how much did Joelinton cost Newcastle when he swapped Hoffenheim for Tyneside?

The article claims that Newcastle manager Steve Bruce “has encouraged the club to extend Gayle’s contract but, given his age, injury record and wages in excess of £50,000 a week, it is unclear whether the club hierarchy are as receptive to renewing the striker’s deal.”

This post then gathered a lot of replies from Newcastle fans who were quick to share their thoughts on this news.

So, what did these Newcastle fans have to say about this news on Gayle?

“Get rid”

@wt2244

“Sell him while we can”

@Toontruth1

“Good he should be sold”

@_arrongallagher

“Correct decision, Get him sold”

@sastevenjessica

“No thanks he’s not premier league level pops up with the odd goal but his general play isn’t good enough”

@SeanReesNUFC

“Agree with those at the top for once. It’s his time to go”

@Joe081223

Newcastle signed Gayle back in July 2016 from fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace.

Overall, the 31-year-old, who is currently valued at £7.2 million, has made 100 appearances for the Tyneside club in which he has managed to score 34 goals and provide 10 assists, prior to their league clash against Arsenal on Monday night.

Looking at the replies to this post, it appears that these Newcastle fans think the club should not renew Gayle’s deal and sell him instead.

Would you offer Dwight Gayle a new deal at Newcastle?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Given how Gayle has only made four appearances for Newcastle in the league, all from the bench, this indicates that he isn’t a significant player for Bruce and perhaps wouldn’t be worth him signing a new deal.
