Speaking recently on the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano claimed that Liverpool are in the race to sign Bayern Munich defender, David Alaba.

Since moving to Bayern from Young Violets Austria Wien in what was a £135k deal back in 2008, Alaba has gone on to feature 405 times for Die Roten, scoring 32 goals and providing 49 assists along the way.

First up in this Mo Salah quiz, what is his current squad number for Liverpool?

However, so far this season, the £58.5 million-rated 28-year-old has been slightly disappointing over his 13 Bundesliga appearances for Hans-Dieter Flick’s side, making an average of 0.9 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 1.4 clearances per game, culminating in an average WhoScored match rating of 6.53 – ranking him as the club’s joint ninth-worst performer in the German top flight.

Perhaps this could be attributed to the fact that the Austria international’s future remains uncertain at present, as his current contract with Bayern expires at the end of the season, with it being reported that the versatile centre-back is keen to leave Germany in the summer.

And, should Alaba’s departure from Bayern indeed come to fruition, Romano recently claimed, speaking on a recent episode of the Here We Go podcast, that Liverpool are incredibly interested in bringing the player to the Premier League.

He said: “The dream of David Alaba is playing for Real Madrid and negotiations at the moment are absolutely on. So, Real Madrid are leading the race. But, among [the] five clubs interested in David Alaba with Real Madrid, we have Liverpool, and this is the news today.

“They would love to have David Alaba as a free agent – we are talking about next summer, but the deal will obviously be [done] during January. Liverpool are so interested, they are in touch with his agent, too.

“At the moment, Real Madrid, I want to say again, are leading the race. But, Liverpool are [also] trying for David Alaba with an important bid. So, we will see what’s going on in the next days, but, at the moment, it’s Real Madrid [in] first position and Liverpool [are] in the race. But it’s not signed yet.”

TIF Thoughts on Fabrizio Romano’s comments regarding Liverpool’s interest in David Alaba…

Considering the fact that Jurgen Klopp is facing a central defensive injury crisis, with all three of Liverpool’s senior centre-backs currently sidelined, a move for a player in the position would seem a sensible move by the club.

However, with Alaba under contract until the summer, while the capture of the 28-year-old would, in our opinion, be an impressive one, it does not much help the crisis that Liverpool currently find themselves in.

As such, should the Reds wish to afford themselves the best possible chance of retaining their Premier League crown, the logical move would appear to be prioritising the signing of a centre-back who is available immediately, rather than six months down the line.
