Leeds United were left frustrated on Saturday afternoon, as they fell to a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
The Whites fell behind after 29 minutes, as Ezgjan Alioski was deemed to have brought down Steven Bergwijn in the penalty area. Harry Kane stepped up and fired home the spot-kick in convincing style.
Heung-Min Son then made it 2-0 shortly before half-time, with Toby Alderweireld heading home Spurs’ third goal of the match just five minutes into the second-half.
They were hit with an irritating blow late on, with midfielder Kalvin Phillips picking up a yellow card in the 89th minute, which was his fifth of the season.
That means that the 25-year-old will now serve a one-match suspension, which keeps him out of the game against Brighton and Hove Albion on the 16th January at Elland Road.
Phillips has been a regular for Leeds this season, making 14 appearances in all competitions this term and is likely to leave a sizeable void in the hear of their midfield, with Jamie Shackleton likely to be in contention to replace him in the starting XI.
Plenty of the Elland Road faithful were quick to take to social media to react to the news of Phillips being hit with a one-match suspension.
Take a look at the best of the reaction below.
“Poor from Phillips but even worse not subbing him off for the last 10 minutes.”
“Had to happen sooner or later..he’s involved all the time and sticks the boot in when needed.”
“You really wonder what goes through a footballers head when they make challenges like that at 3-0 down.”
“Thats a bit annoying but was going to come sooner or later. Least were not losing Klich and Phillips for the same game.”
“Didn’t want to face his bezzie @ben6white.”
“Don’t understand that at all from Kalvin so poor.”
“I’m all up for stopping a break but when your on 4 yellows and were 3-0 down it makes no sense.”
“Of all the bookings to pick up, that was a stupid and unnecessary one!”
“I have to say, 2021 is looking bleak”
“R U KIDDING ME”
“That will sting.”
