Speaking recently on the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano discussed Aston Villa’s move for Olympique Marseille midfielder, Morgan Sanson.

Since joining Marseille from Montpellier HSC in what was an £8.1 million deal back in January of 2017, Sanson has gone on to feature 156 times for the Ligue 1 side, scoring 25 goals and providing 22 assists along the way.

First up in this Gareth Barry quiz, which club did Villa sign the midfielder from?

So far this season, the £18 million-rated 26-year-old has impressed over his 11 league appearances for Andre Villas-Boas’ side, scoring two goals and providing three assists, as well as averaging a WhoScored match rating of 6.84 – ranking him as the club’s ninth-best performer in the French top flight.

And, it would appear that the Frenchman’s displays have caught the eye of Villa boss, Dean Smith, with the Birmingham-based club reported to be in talks with OM regarding the transfer of the former French U21 international, in a deal thought to be worth around £15 million.

Villa’s move for Sanson was one topic of conversation on a recent episode of the Here We Go podcast, in which Romano revealed that the club are indeed close to landing the midfielder this month.

He said: “I think yes, the agreement is close between Aston Villa and Marseille around less than €20 million; [it will be] around €17-18 million. The player wants to join, he wants to try the Premier League experience. So, Aston Villa are close to signing Sanson.”

TIF Thoughts on Fabrizio Romano’s comments regarding Morgan Sanson…

If Romano is to be believed, Sanson should become an Aston Villa player over the coming weeks, with all signs pointing towards the deal being done prior to the January window’s closure.

As such, it would appear that Smith will be adding a fine player to his options in the centre of the pitch, which, in our opinion, will do nothing to harm Villa’s already impressive form in the Premier Leauge so far this season.
