Dom Howson spent some time talking about all of the latest Sheffield Wednesday transfer news on the most recent edition of Owls-focused podcast Singing The Blues

This comes after the Yorkshire club has already added Andre Green and Sam Hutchinson to their first-team this month, as they attempt to strengthen their squad for their battle against relegation from the second-tier, with Wednesday currently sitting in 23rd place on the Championship table

An easy one to kick off our quiz on the 2020 summer transfer window in the EFL, which player left Birmingham City to join Borussia Dortmund?

During this podcast, Howson shed some light on what business the Yorkshire club could get done between now and the end of the transfer window. On that note, the journalist discussed Wednesday’s pursuit of Crewe Alexandra left-back, Harry Pickering, explaining that “they’ve put a bid in” for the 22-year-old, before going on to share that he feels Pickering “would be a real coup” for the Owls.

Howson said: “I think they would ideally like to bring in, before the close of play on Monday, a left-back. Harry Pickering at Crewe is someone that they’ve targeted, they’ve put a bid in for him, he really does fit the profile.

“When you’re talking about exciting, young talent, I think that’s someone who Wednesday fans could definitely get on board with – he’s 22, he’s had a couple of great seasons at Crewe, played 150 matches, that would be a real coup.

“Crewe, I think, are looking for around £600-650k – they’re not under pressure to sell, Crewe, I think that’s important to stress. They sold Perry Ng to Cardiff about a week to 10 days ago, so financially, the ball is very much in Crewe’s court as to what they want to do with Harry Pickering.

“He would be someone that would offer that versatility, he can play left-back, left-wing, he can play central midfield, got a great energy about him, fresh legs and that would be one that I think would be a terrific signing for the future for the club.”

TIF Thoughts on what Howson had to say about Pickering…

It may be understandable why Sheffield Wednesday would be in the market for a left-back, given that they currently have just one natural left-back in their first-team squad, in the form of Matt Penney, per Transfermarkt.

Signing Pickering could well be a wise move for the Yorkshire club, as Howson indicated. In addition to the praise the player received from the journalist on this podcast, the Crewe academy product has recently been described as ‘arguably the most highly-rated left-back plying his trade outside of the Championship,’ and he’s been tipped to have ‘a successful career.’

So, if the Owls are willing to meet Crewe’s alleged asking price of £600-650k, then perhaps Pickering is one that the Hillsborough faithful should be excited about and it will be interesting to see if the Championship side does splash out to get this deal over the line.
