Supporters of Leeds United have been reacting to a post that was shared on Instagram by French goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
During the latest round of Premier League fixtures, the Whites fell to a 1-0 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion at Elland Road (per Transfermarkt).
Starting between the sticks for Marcelo Bielsa’s side was Kiko Casilla, though, with Elia Caprile as the substitute goalkeeper.
He said: ‘Sorry to miss today’s [game,] behind you all the way boys. Thank you to the fans for all the support, I’m recovering well. Please stay safe. See you soon #MOT #LUFC’
After this was relayed on Twitter by Hay, it had lots of supporters talking.
So, what did these Leeds fans have to say following Illan Meslier’s post on Instagram?
“This seems like a planned post Phil – only disclose Meslier’s condition when the team is announced. The club would know that Leeds social media would go into melt down at this news.”
The game against the Seagulls was the first Premier League match which the 20-year-old ‘keeper has missed for the Whites so far this season (as per Transfermarkt).
Do Leeds need to sign better backup for Illan Meslier than Kiko Casilla?
Yes, we need more quality
No, Kiko's good enough
“Now I understand why we were so eager to postpone Southampton @Leedsarewefoot1”
“Really hope that’s all it is and that a big money offer hasn’t come in. A super young keeper who will only improve.”
Over the 17 appearances which the stopper has made in the top flight for the Yorkshire outfit so far this season, he has kept six clean sheets but shipped a whopping 33 goals.
In those games, Meslier has earned a solid 6.84/10 average rating, making him the eighth-best performer in Bielsa’s squad so far this term (per WhoScored).
“Hold me phil.”
“Pouring myself a massive drink phil, i can’t handle this”
As can be seen in these responses from Leeds fans, many of them were concerned after Meslier shared the post regarding his absence on Instagram.
And, they were right to be concerned as Leeds ended up losing 1-0 to Graham Potter’s side.
