Former Celtic player Kris Commons has recently been discussing the club’s transfer regret involving John McGinn.

Commons was recently talking on the latest episode of the Celtic Huddle podcast and the panel discussed multiple issues involving the Bhoys. One topic of discussion was the club’s recruitment and this led to Commons talking about how the Hoops missed out on McGinn. He believes that the midfielder could’ve taken over from Scott Brown as the club’s captain.

The Hoops were looking to sign McGinn in the summer of 2018 and they had made as many as three bids to sign the then-Hibernian midfielder. Their third bid was in the region of £2 million, but it was turned down by Hibs (as per Edinburgh News).

McGinn had later revealed that he initially had his heart set on a move to Celtic but it was disappointing that a move to Parkhead didn’t materialise.

Commons believes that Peter Lawwell tried to get McGinn on the cheap and that approach has come back to haunt him.

He said: “You’ve only got to look at the likes of John McGinn – you know, a couple of million quid would’ve sealed the deal. He could’ve been arguably taking over Scott Brown’s position, being Celtic captain; [a] Celtic supporter.

“And he came out and said, it was just delay tactics, [it was] being silly. Trying to get him on the cheap and I just think it’s bit [Lawwell] in the backside.”

TIF Thoughts on Commons’ regarding McGinn…

Now at Aston Villa, McGinn has made nine Premier League appearances under Dean Smith this season and has contributed to five goals already (as per WhoScored).

In the league, the Scotsman has picked up a rating of 7.01 for his side and he has been the club’s sixth-best rated player in the campaign (as per WhoScored).

This shows that he has indeed stepped up a gear at Villa Park and considering his performances, it is easy to understand why Celtic should regret missing out on him back in 2018.
