Paul John Dykes and Kevin Graham discussed all of the latest Celtic news on the most recent edition of Hoops podcast A Celtic State of Mind and they spent some time sharing their thoughts on why the Glasgow club is sticking by Neil Lennon despite the Hoops’ poor results on the pitch.

Prior to Sunday’s Scottish League Cup defeat to Ross County, Lennon declared that he retains the backing of the Glasgow club’s decision-makers and since then, despite getting knocked out of the League Cup when they suffered a 2-0 loss to the Staggies and plenty of Celtic’s supporters subsequently heading to Celtic Park to make it clear that they want the 49-year-old coach to leave, the club’s board is reportedly still behind the Northern Irish manager, which goes on to be described as ‘unbelievable’ by Graham. And, since the podcast has been released, Sky Sports have reported that the board have faith in Neil Lennon.

So, with Celtic’s decision-makers making it clear that Lennon is still their man, here is what Graham had to say on the club’s support of the manager:

“It seems quite unusual that they’re backing their man this much. It’s unbelievable that they’re still backing their man to this degree. It makes me wonder what we’re not getting told. What are the reasons that they won’t make this decision? Why? Come out and tell us why.

“Are they giving him until the cup final? Are they giving him the chance to win the treble? That was the only thing I can stick in my mind now – the reason that he’s not gone today – they want to give him until the cup final.”

Do you think Celtic's board are backing Lennon because of the SFA Cup Final?

TIF Thoughts on what Graham had to say about Celtic’s support of Lennon…

While we’re in the 2020/21 season, the 2019/20 SFA Cup Final between Celtic and Heart of Midlothian – who currently play in Scotland’s second tier having been relegated from the Premiership when last season ended prematurely – is set to take place on 20th December and so, could Celtic be giving Lennon until the cup final to finish that job?

While it seems like Graham thinks so, we feel that it would be unwise for the Glasgow club to keep Lennon solely for that reason, as Celtic’s hopes of winning what would be a historic 10th straight Scottish top-flight title would surely take precedence over the opportunity to win last season’s SFA Cup.

Additionally, perhaps there’s an argument to be made that with Celtic winning just one of their last nine games in all competitions and even getting knocked out of this season’s League Cup by Ross County on Sunday, they may well give themselves a better chance of securing the 2019/20 SFA Cup by replacing Lennon as their current form under him is far from inspiring.

So, we feel that there has got to be reasons other than the 2019/20 SFA Cup Final to explain why Lennon seemingly retains the backing of Celtic’s board.
