The Athletic’s Wolverhampton Wanderers correspondent Tim Spiers has provided an update on Mexican striker Raul Jimenez.

During the Old Gold’s recent 2-1 victory over Arsenal, the frontman had to be removed from the action following a clash of heads with David Luiz (per BBC).

Following the clash with the Brazilian defender, Jimenez received treatment on the field for 10 minutes before being taken to hospital.

It was later revealed that the forward had received surgery on a fractured skull and was ‘comfortable’ in hospital following the operation (per Wolves).

During a recent episode of The Athletic’s The Molineux View podcast, Spiers discussed the latest on the Mexican frontman.

To kick off this quiz on Romain Saiss, what squad number does the defensive midfielder currently wear for the Old Gold?

He said: “The initial signs are positive, as positive as they can be. I mean, you’ve got to say first and foremost, this is a life-threatening injury – a fractured skull.

“So, thankfully, the initial signs were positive. He was up and talking, he was conscious, underwent surgery almost immediately at one of the four major trauma centres that they’ve got in London.

“He’ll be there for a few days now undergoing round-the-clock observations to check his mental alertness, mental acuity, he’ll have his pupils checked, things like that – he’ll undergo scans on his brain.

“Of course, we won’t speculate as to just how serious Raul’s injury is, but the fact that he was initially up and talking is a positive sign.

“Immediately, people’s thoughts turn to his recovery now, I guess, after the initial shock and the well-wishes towards him. We kind of ask, number one, will he play football again? And number two, if he does, how long will he be out for?”

TIF Thoughts on what Tim Spiers said about Raul Jimenez…

As can be seen in what the journalist had to say, the early signs regarding Jimenez’s situation are positive but there is no clearer picture on if the striker will play again or when that would be.

So far this term, the Mexican has been the Old Gold’s fifth-best performer in the Premier League after earning a solid 6.91/10 average rating over 10 outings (per WhoScored).

So, it is clear that the striker will be a big miss for Nuno Espirito Santo, however, the player’s wellbeing is, of course, the most pressing issue first and foremost.

Hopefully, for Jimenez and the Old Gold, the striker can make a full recovery.
