Tottenham Hotspur journalist Alasdair Gold has been discussing Lilywhites full-back Matt Doherty and his immediate future at the north London club.

This comes after Gold recently uploaded a video onto his YouTube channel where he spoke about a number of different topics concerning Jose Mourinho’s side.

How well can you remember Spurs' season so far? 1. Who is Spurs' top scorer in all competitions so far this season?

On the topic of Doherty, who has not made a Premier League appearance for Spurs since their 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion back in November, Gold had this to say on the defender.

He said: “Matt Doherty [is] likely to get a chance on Wednesday night against Stoke and as I said, [it’s] been very much a transition for him in remembering to be a right-back again, which is very different – don’t let anyone tell you that it’s just literally standing a few paces back to being a wing-back, it’s not – it’s a very different role in a different position, a different kind of defensive work needed, different covering your centre-back.

“I think he’s been working hard on that. Let’s see what he does on Wednesday night, but he’ll get chances over these coming weeks, and I think you’ll see a better Matt Doherty.”

Spurs signed the Irishman from fellow Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers back in the previous summer transfer window for a fee of £15.12 million.

Since then, the full-back, who is currently valued at £18 million, has made 13 appearances for Spurs across all competitions in which he has managed to provide one assist (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts on Alasdair Gold’s comments on Doherty…

Given how Serge Aurier picked up a rather disappointing match rating of 5.58/10 for his performance in Spurs’ previous league game against Leicester City, this could persuade Mourinho to give Doherty a chance to prove himself in the team in their midweek Carabao Cup clash against Stoke City as Gold mentioned in the video.

Who do you think should be Spurs' first choice right-back?

In our view, and taking into account that Doherty has earned himself a decent season rating of 7.06/10 for his Premier League appearances so far this season, he has shown that he is capable of doing a good job for the team when called upon.
