BBC football pundit Garth Crooks has heaped praise on the job that Steve Bruce has done at Newcastle United.

The 59-year-old manager has been situated at St. James’ Park since the summer of 2019 after he joined the Toon following a short stint with Sheffield Wednesday (per Transfermarkt).

During his first season with Newcastle, Bruce guided the North-East club to 13th in the top flight, the same position which Rafael Benitez achieved the season before.

However, it has been suggested that Toon fans are keen to see the English manager replaced at St. James’ Park (as per Chronicle Live).

During BBC Sport’s Final Score prior to Newcastle’s clash with West Bromwich Albion, Crooks heaped praise on the job that Bruce has done.

Starting with an easy one, what number does Wilson wear for Newcastle?

He said: “Listen, I think Steve Bruce has done a fantastic job.

“From a position where they were looking for a manager, Newcastle, they didn’t want Steve Bruce.

“He’s come in, he’s done a patchwork job but he’s actually found a striker to give them cutting edge.

“At the back, it’s reasonable. You know, it’s not the greatest back four in the world, but it’s holding its own.”

TIF Thoughts on what Garth Crooks said about Steve Bruce…

As can be seen in what the pundit had to say, he believes that Bruce has done “fantastic” work at St. James’ Park because it has had to be “a patchwork job”.

Do you think Steve Bruce has done a 'fantastic job' at St. James' Park?

No, he needs to go

Yes, Crooks was right

Presumably, the striker which Crooks is referring to is the summer signing of Callum Wilson from Bournemouth for around £20m (per BBC).

The praise of the English frontman perhaps comes as no surprise, too, as Wilson has been the Toon’s second-best performer in the Premier League so far this season (as per WhoScored).

However, with Mike Ashley still trying to force through the Saudi-backed takeover bid for the club and Bruce having aired his fear for his job if the takeover is successful, perhaps the Englishman’s future is looking uncertain no matter how well his tenure at Newcastle is being perceived.
