Newcastle United will be looking to put on an improved performance when they return to action on Wednesday evening.

The Magpies were well-beaten by Manchester City in their most recent fixture, as Pep Guardiola’s side ran out comfortable 2-0 winners at the Etihad Stadium.

Steve Bruce’s side only had 25% of the possession on the day, and failed to carve out a clear-cut chance, which saw them come away empty-handed on Boxing Day.

That defeat means that Newcastle head into the game sitting 15th in the Premier League table, with the pressure increasing on Bruce after an inconsistent run of results over the festive period.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Newcastle boss either, as they prepare to take on league leaders Liverpool on Wednesday evening at St. James’ Park.

Paul Tierney has been named as the referee for the match against Jurgen Klopp’s side, with Newcastle revealing who the officials will be on the night, as they posted an update on social media.

It’s fair to say that plenty of the St. James’ Park faithful weren’t confident of picking up any points in this one. Take a look at the best of the reaction from Twitter below.
