On the topic of his former club and their season so far, Richards had this to say on Cancelo in particular.

He said: “I’ve been disappointed with him if I’m being totally honest because we all know he’s technically good, but for £60 million, I’d like to see more.

“If you’re not going to be a good defender, make sure you’re getting forward, you’re getting goals and assists and I think he needs to bring that.”

Pep Guardiola’s club signed the full-back in the 2019 summer transfer window from Italian side Juventus for a fee of £58.5 million.

Since then, the 26-year-old, who is currently valued at £32.4 million, has made 43 appearances for City, prior to their match against Fulham, in which he has managed to score two goals and provide two assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts on Micah Richards’ comments on Cancelo…

So far this season, prior to the Fulham game, Cancelo has made 10 appearances for City across the Premier League and the Champions League in which he has already grabbed himself a goal and an assist for his teammates, which shows that he has got involved in an attacking sense, which goes against what Richards had to say on the right-back.

As well as his attacking abilities, Cancelo has made more tackles (3.2) and interceptions (1.8) per game than any other City player in the Premier League, which shows that he has been doing his fair share of defensive work for the club too.
